Blue Rush: The Hulhumalé Session
Project type
Underwater Documentary
Date
January 2026
Location
Maldieves
6 Days | 12 Dives | 30 Meters
In a rapid-fire series of twelve descents over just six days, I sought to capture the sheer scale and raw energy of life in the North Malé Atoll. This collection is a concentrated study of the Maldives' most iconic pelagic residents: the massive, swirling congregations of Tawny Nurse Sharks and the velvet-black shadows of Stingrays patrolling the seafloor.
While the Maldives is often portrayed as a serene paradise, these images were born from a more demanding reality. To capture these encounters, we pushed to maximum recreational depths of 30 meters, navigating the subtle but persistent mild currents that characterize the Hulhumalé channels. These conditions require a balance of technical focus and artistic patience—holding steady in the blue to wait for a 3-meter shark to break the silhouette of the reef.
From the complex architecture of ancient coral plateaus to the adrenaline of "shark piles" in the deep, this gallery captures the feeling of being a brief guest in a fast-moving, monumental world. It is a tribute to the power, grace, and resilience of the Indian Ocean’s giants.
